FOR UNLOOKED FOR THINGS
Isa 64:3-4: When Thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, Thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at Thy presence. For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside Thee, what He hath prepared for him that waiteth for Him. 1 Cor 2:11-12: Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
The reference here is to both the God Who works, and the thing that He Personally does work, which the Holy Spirit reveals. We so confidently say, and it is true: Isa 63:16: Doubtless Thou art our Father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: Thou, O LORD, art our Father, my Redeemer; Thy Name is from everlasting. Yet: Mal 1:6: “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a Father, where is the honor due Me? If I am a master, where is the respect due Me?” says the LORD Almighty. Unless God comes down “as the melting fire burneth, to make His Name known to His adversaries,” our labors are comparatively fruitless.
Look at the ministry…how much it is in the wisdom of man and literary culture, and how little in demonstration of the Spirit and of Power. Look at the unity of the body… how little there is of the manifestation of the power of a Heavenly love binding God’s children into one. Think of holiness…how little the world sees of the holiness of Christ-like humility and crucifixion to the world in the children of God, who live in Christ in Heaven, in whom Christ and Heaven live. Unless God comes down “As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make Thy name known to Thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Thy presence!”…our labors are comparatively fruitless!
I must wait upon God; I must cry with a cry that never rests, “Oh that Thou wouldest rend the Heavens, that Thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at Thy Presence!” [Isa 64:1-2]. I must desire and believe, I must ask and expect, that God will do unlooked-for things. I must set my faith on a God of Whom men do not know what He hath prepared for them that wait for Him. Our wonder-doing God, Who can surpass all my expectations, must be the God of my confidence! I must enlarge my heart to wait upon my God as One Who can do exceedingly abundantly above what I could ever ask or even think! And therefore will the LORD wait, that He may be gracious unto me, and therefore will He be exalted, that He may have mercy upon me; blessed are all they that wait for Him! [Isa 30:18]
This is the blessed life of deep and intimate personal relationship with God: my waiting upon God…watching and waiting, looking off unto Him and listening for His voice…with an unwavering child-like trust and an unreserved child-like dependence, with a joyful expectation and an excited anticipation, for God to reveal to me His plans, His purposes, His will, a deeper revelation of Who He is, SO I MAY THEN RESPOND with an unquestioning child-like obedience to every leading and prompting of the Holy Spirit, cooperating with the power of His enabling grace Who works in me both to will and to do. My soul, wait thou only upon God!
