My beloved bride…Come! Whoever is thirsty, let him come; whoever wishes, let him take My free gift of the Water of Life! Let him drink who believes in Me; ever coming, ever drinking, continually satisfied! I assure you, never again will you hunger, never again will you thirst! [Jesus…John 7:37-39; 6:35; 4:14; Isa 55:1]
Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me…who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me…as the Scripture has said, from his innermost being shall continuously flow springs and rivers of living water. But He was speaking here of the Holy Spirit, Whom those who believed in Him were afterward to receive. For the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. [John 7:37-39]
Jesus replied to the crowds that had gathered, I tell you the truth, you want to be with Me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given Me the seal of His approval.
They replied, We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?
Jesus told them, This is the only work God wants from you: believe in the One Whom He has sent.
They answered, Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in You. What can You do? After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, Moses gave them bread from Heaven to eat.
Jesus said, I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from Heaven. My Father did. And now He offers you the True Bread from Heaven. The True Bread of God is the One Who comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world.
Sir, they said, give us that bread every day.
Jesus replied, I Myself am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. But you haven’t believed in Me even though you have seen Me. All whom My Father gives to Me will come to Me; and the one who comes to Me I will most certainly not cast out; I will never, no never, reject one of them who comes to Me. For I have come down from Heaven not to do My Own will and purpose, but to do the will and purpose of Him Who sent Me. And this is the will of Him Who sent Me, that I should not lose any of all that He has given Me, but that I should give them new life and raise them up from the dead at the last day. For this is My Father’s will and His purpose, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in and cleaves to and trusts in and relies upon Him shall indeed have eternal life, and I will raise him up from the dead at the last day.
Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because He had said, I am the Bread that came down from Heaven. They said, Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know his father and mother. How can he say, I came down from Heaven?
So Jesus answered them, Stop grumbling and saying things against Me to one another. No one is able to come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me attracts and draws him and gives him the desire to come to Me, and then I will raise him up from the dead at the last day. As it is written in the Scriptures, They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me. Not that anyone has ever seen the Father, except He Who was with the Father, Who comes from God; I alone have seen the Father. I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, he who believes in Me…who adheres to, trusts in, relies on, and has faith in Me…even now possesses eternal life. I Myself am the Bread of Life that gives Life…the Living Bread. Your forefathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and yet they died. But this is the Bread that comes down from Heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and never die. I Myself am the Living Bread that came down from Heaven. Anyone who eats this Bread will live forever; and this Bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is My flesh.
Then the people began arguing with each other about what He meant. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?, they asked.
So Jesus said again, I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood…unless you appropriate His life and the saving merit of His Blood…you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats My flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person from the dead at the last day. For My flesh is True food, and My Blood is True drink. He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood dwells continually in Me, and I in like manner dwell continually in him. Just as the Living Father sent Me and I live by the Father, even so whoever continues to take Me for his food and is nourished by Me shall in his turn live through and because of Me. This is the Bread that came down from Heaven. It is not like the manna which our forefathers ate, and yet died; he who takes this Bread for his food shall live forever. [John 6:26-59]
Open my eyes, Lord, I want to see Jesus:
