Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him…those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the Earth. [Ps 37:7, 9]
My beloved child…My Holy Spirit shows you what an important element patience is in the life and character of My children. And no where is there a better place for cultivating or displaying patience than in waiting upon God. If you truly set yourself to wait upon Me, you shall find that it is with Me you are impatient, because I do not at once, or as soon as you could wish, do your bidding. It is in waiting upon God that your eyes are opened to believe in My wise and Sovereign will, and to see that the sooner and more completely you yield in absolute surrender to it, the more surely My blessing can come to you. You have as little power to increase or strengthen your spiritual life as you had to originate it: So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but of God Who shows mercy. [Rom 9:16] In the power of your sin- enslaved human nature… in reliance upon your human capabilities and capacities; by your own efforts and in your own strength; according to your own wisdom, knowledge, and understanding… you are hopelessly powerless, hopelessly impotent, hopelessly helpless to do anything that is good, or pleasing, or acceptable to God. So then, My child, God’s gift is not a question of human will and human effort, but of My mercy. It depends not on your own willingness nor on your strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God having mercy on you. For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. [Phil 2:13] Your willing and running, your desire and effort, avail naught…all is “of God Who shows mercy.”
** **, it is not in trying, but in trusting; not in running, but in resting; not in wandering, but in waiting; not in pondering, but in praying; that you find the strength of the Lord. All the exercises of the spiritual life…your reading and praying, your willing and doing…have their very great value, but they can go no further than this: they point the way and prepare you in humility to look to and depend upon nothing and no one but God alone, and in patience to wait My good time and mercy. Patient waiting is meant to teach absolute dependence upon God’s mighty working, and lead you in perfect patience to place yourself at My disposal. “Rest in the Lord…be still before the Lord;” it is resting in the Lord, in My will, My promise, My faithfulness, and My Love, that makes patience easy. Has not My Divine Son Jesus entreated you, “Come unto Me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me…for I am meek and lowly, and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light [Mt 11:28-30] And your resting in Me is nothing but being silent unto Me, still before Me. Be still, and know that I AM God. Have your thoughts and wishes, your fears and hopes, hushed into calm and quiet in that great peace of God which surpasses all understanding. That peace keeps your heart and mind when you are anxious about anything, because you have made your request known to Me. The rest, the silence, the stillness, and the patient waiting, all find their strength and joy in My unclouded Presence.
My beloved child, if only you would just fully embrace this deepest desire of My heart…I long far more to bless you than you can ever desire it, but, as the husbandman has long patience until the fruit be ripe, so I bow Myself to your slowness and bear long with you. You need only, then, wait patiently; of each promise and every answer to prayer My Word is true: “I the Lord will hasten it in its time. “Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” Yes, wait patiently for Me. You are to seek not only the help or the gift you need; you are to seek God Himself, to wait for Me. Your patient waiting upon God honors Me greatly. It willingly acknowledges Me as God on the Throne, giving Me free reign to work in you…both to will and to do, according to My Own gracious purpose. It yields self wholly into My hands: seeking only to cooperate with My grace; refusing to initiate any activity [David inquired of God: 1 Chron 14:10]; purposing only to respond to every leading and prompting of My Holy Spirit. It lets God be God in your life. You are to honor Me and give God the glory due Me by resting in Me, by trusting Me fully, by waiting patiently for Me. You need only surrender yourself wholly into My loving arms with an unwavering child-like trust, wait patiently upon Me with an unreserved child-like dependence, and set your heart beforehand to obey, and to accept, My will with an unquestioning child-like obedience. I know full well what you need and when you need it, far more so than you think you know. “I the Lord will hasten it in its time.”
Abba Father…I understand; thank You for making this so clear to me. You have shown me over the years during our times alone together just to commune, that there are two operating principles out of which I can live my life…the power of the flesh, or the Power of the Spirit. Those whose lives are under the guidance of the flesh…their sin- enslaved human nature…set their mind on and pursue what that nature desires; but those who live guided by the Holy Spirit set their mind on and seek after what Your Spirit desires.
Whenever I choose to live controlled by the power of my flesh, I live my everyday life in reliance upon my human capabilities and capacities, by my own efforts and in my own strength, according to my own wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Those who choose to live controlled by the Power of Your Holy Spirit live their everyday life in reliance upon His Divine capabilities and capacities, by His efforts and in His strength, according to His Divine Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding. Enable me, Father, by the power of Your enabling grace to fully embrace His Divine Power that has given me everything I need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Jesus, the One Who called me by His Own glory and goodness. Through these, Christ Jesus has given me His Own very great and precious promises, so that through them I may participate in the Divine nature now dwelling within me, and thereby escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. [2 Pet 1:3-4] Father…I realize that living in the Power of Your Holy Spirit is a life of watching and waiting upon God, looking off unto You and listening for Your voice…for You to place me where I am to be, lead me where I am to go, show me what I am to do to participate in Your work, give me the thoughts I am to think and present, the words to speak or write. This was the life of Your Divine Son Jesus when He lived on this Earth. I am to live my everyday life by the example set by Christ Jesus Your Son, Who said, “I only do what My Father shows Me to do; I only speak the words My Father gives Me to speak.”
Abba Father, enable me to fully understand so as to diligently avoid this…life in the power of the flesh is characterized by trying rather than by trusting. It is a life requiring my continual striving and struggling; all of my efforts, redoubled efforts, and strength; all my commitments and resolutions; all my pledges and promises. Even then… the absolute weakness of my sin-enslaved human nature guarantees I will utterly fail! A life of trying in the power of my flesh ignores Your Eternal Provision for my living a holy and righteous life: the gift of Your Holy Spirit given to dwell in me, and His eternal Power made available to me. It disregards Your command to keep on being continually filled with Your Holy Spirit, giving Him free reign over the conduct of my everyday life.
Trying in the power of my flesh to do Your work and Your will presumes that I am fully capable of doing so, and do not need You. It is an assertion of my self-reliance and self-sufficiency, and that I have no need for dependence upon Your Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding. It is not well-pleasing to You at all, Father; it is a life of utter failure and spiritual bankruptcy! Even just trying by my own efforts and in my own strength to live a holy and righteous life is in itself presumptuous…it presumes that I can actually do so, that I can be well-pleasing in Your sight in the power of my sin-enslaved human nature. The truth of the matter is…apart from You I can do nothing that is good, or pleasing, or acceptable to God!
Father, You have clearly shown me that life in the Power of Your Spirit is characterized by trusting, and not by trying. It is a life of unwavering child-like trust, prompting me to look to Your Holy Spirit with an unreserved child-like dependence for His leading and guiding, to show me what I am to do and when, so that I may then respond with an unquestioning child-like obedience. Continually and unceasingly throughout the day and night, my heart needs to breathe in that breath of life that comes from Your Holy Spirit and sustains my spiritual life…just the same as my lungs need, continually and unceasingly, to breathe in that breath of life that comes from the outside air and sustains my physical life! Trusting implies that I know beyond the shadow of a doubt I cannot satisfy my spiritual needs trying by my own efforts and strength. Trusting is a conscious decision to live my everyday life in reliance upon the Power of Your indwelling Spirit. It is an expression of death to self, and absolute reliance upon the sufficiency of God. The only way to live my everyday life in the Power of Your Spirit is to trust You, Father, to do this in me. With an unwavering child-like trust…I need only wait upon You, look off unto You, listen for Your voice. You will most assuredly lead me and guide me; You will show me what I am to do and when. When I hear Your voice, I need only respond and cooperate. I respond in obedience; I cooperate with the power of Your enabling grace. Your Spirit is at work in me, working in me both to will and to do. Please keep me from running off ahead of You, or without You…into a life of utter futility!
Father…I fully realize that the Power of Your enabling grace can not…can never…be manifested and exercised in me by my sin-enslaved human nature! Only Your Holy Spirit can make Your enabling grace effective in me. Father…help me to understand, and to fully embrace this truth! It is Your work, not my work; my place is simply to cooperate and to respond. I live a life of trust not by trying to do what You show me to do, but by cooperating with Your enabling grace to do so. I am not to try by my own efforts and in my own strength; I am to cooperate with Your strength, Your wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, with Your capabilities and capacities. It is Your work, not mine.
My place in Your work is to attentively and diligently look for the leading and guiding of Your Holy Spirit in everything concerning my everyday life, and to cooperate with the power of His enabling grace to do all that He prompts me to do, or say, or think. He is the One Who produces fruit in my life; I am simply to be a branch that bears His fruit! I participate in Your work by making the members of my body and all my faculties available to You as instruments of righteousness, leading to holiness. I need only offer myself to God as a living sacrifice, a vessel dedicated for Your honor and well-pleasing to You. This is my spiritual act of true worship. Abba Father…I understand! I am just the paint brush in the hand of the Master; the pen in the hand of the Author; the bow in the hand of the Master Violinist. I am just the instrument of Your Righteousness…a vessel set apart for noble purposes, holy and consecrated to the Master, prepared and ready to be used for Your every good purpose. This is my life; this is what I live for. The all-prevailing, all pervading, atmosphere in which my soul lives and moves and has its very being is an unwavering child-like trust in You, Father. The underlying foundation for my unwavering child-like trust is that in the very depths of my being I have embraced the reality of Your fathomless love for Your child, and Your absolute Sovereignty over all Creation. Hallelujah!
This is surely the blessed life of deep and intimate personal relationship with You: my waiting upon God…watching and waiting, looking off unto You and listening for Your voice…with an unwavering child-like trust and an unreserved child-like dependence, with a joyful expectation and an excited anticipation, for You to reveal Yourself to me ever more deeply and intimately, and Your plans, Your purposes, Your will for me…SO I MAY THEN RESPOND, with an unquestioning child-like obedience, to every leading and prompting of Your Holy Spirit, cooperating with the Power of His enabling grace Who works in me both to will and to do.
My soul, wait thou only upon God! [https://preservechristianfamily.org/2019/05/10/waiting-upon-god/]
